Isaac newton law of gravity7/31/2023 ![]() Newton knew the length of two meridional arcs that he could use for this calculation, measured by surveyors in England and France. To derive Earth’s figure based on this theory, Newton first had to calculate the ratio between gravitational acceleration and centrifugal force at the equator (a 1-to-290.8 ratio), based on the period of Earth’s diurnal rotation and estimates of Earth’s equatorial diameter. He proposed modeling planets as rotating fluids in equilibrium, where the planet’s shape is stable while the force generated by its rotational motion, and the gravitational attraction between its particles, acts on it. To resolve this, he proposed that the solid Earth had behaved like a fluid throughout its formation, gradually bulging up at the equator because of the centrifugal effect. Newton accepted Huygens’s theory but realized it meant something strange: If Earth is a sphere and its centrifugal effect is strongest at the equator, gravity would vary across Earth’s surface, and the ocean would bulge up at the equator - a proposition that Newton considered absurd. This was surprising, but it could be explained by the theory of centrifugal motion, recently developed by Christian Huygens: The theory suggested that the centrifugal effect is strongest at the equator, so the net effective surface gravity would decrease as you moved from Paris to Cayenne. Richer found that the clock, calibrated to Parisian astronomical time (48☄0’ latitude), lost an average of 2.5 minutes per day in Cayenne (5° latitude). In 1671, Richer had traveled to Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana in South America, and experimented with a pendulum clock. Newton began his quantitative derivation of Earth’s figure in 1686, after learning about work by the French physicist Jean Richer. Here, I reconstruct Newton’s derivation and its significance. The work changed physics.īut buried in the Principia is an often-overlooked triumph: Newton’s derivation of Earth’s figure - that is, the calculation of its shape, size, and surface gravity variation, part of a field later known as geodesy - which was crucial to his argument for universal gravitation. ![]() ![]() Isaac Newton’s landmark 1687 work, “Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica,” laid the groundwork for classical mechanics, describing the laws of gravitation and predicting astronomical phenomena, like the movement of planets. To argue for universal gravitation, Newton had to become a “geodesist.” ![]()

Verdun tannenberg7/31/2023 ![]() When you can do a full match, the game really comes into its own. The AI count doesn’t match the map size but functions well enough, with competent but slow combat. And forget about playing the smaller modes, the player base is sparse. Its large team mode is extremely fun when there are matches to be found. In most shooters with AI, you will find they are usually very basic aimbots or are barely functional, getting stuck on the terrain often. To add to this it is a game of decent quality. Bots are a large part of the sale here after all, being one of the few console shooter games to have it. For both, it’s the main big team modes Frontlines for Verdun and Maneuvers for Tannenberg.īut variety is the spice of life, and it breathes that much more life into the game. Though, you can find 40 player matches that are fluffed with bots at certain times of the day but, it’s also rare.Īnother problem with Tannenberg, which was also a problem in Verdun, is that only one mode has bot support. It has a solid amount of content for the asking price, assuming you like what’s offered.įinding filled lobbies with only players doesn’t happen. The enemy AI, on the other hand, is solid, putting up a good fight, sometimes killing you before you’ve seen them. The AI isn’t very smart either, sometimes they follow you as squad leader, but pretty often they decide to go literally anywhere else. And there can be a good chunk of time between firefights, which happens often unless you move towards the middle of the map. ![]() These maps shipped with 64 players or AI to start on PC.īecause of this difference, the maps play slower on a console. But the number is really low if you solely play with bots, capping out at 24, including the player. It’s rare for a shooter on console to actually have bot modes. This game drives for that immersion and it comes across in its sound design, explosions ring out, machine guns roar, and men yell as they charge headlong towards it.Īnother problem is the AI count. This hurts the atmosphere the game drives for, which consists of blood, mud, and screaming. You lose details on the model the further out you are from a given object which means most of the targets you’re shooting at are non-descript claymen. This applies to the environment as well but commendably, these locations look similar to their real-world counterparts. Its only weakness is the graphics, which have been downgraded compared to “Verdun.” It has really good looking character models and rifle designs but also a really short render distance. The guns are heavy, hit hard, and fire slow, especially the entrenched machine guns, which are capable of mowing down dozens of charging infantry. Though the gameplay is slow, it’s still engaging and even deadly. The engagements are dynamic, from forest skirmishes to rushing or defending flags. Entrenched machine gun nests in particular are absolutely devastating if you’re on the receiving end. Each shot takes a while to aim to shoot, but each shot could be death, so a gunfight can end pretty quickly. You fight mostly with long bolt action rifles. With this in mind, the game plays much slower for it. This game aims for historical accuracy, as its Steam page reads, “With uniforms recreated to the tiniest detail and weapons modelled to exact references.” When playing online, the game holds 40 players with bots making up the difference. Whereas in “Tannenberg,” the teams fight to capture and defend flags in order to control the battlefield. In “Verdun,” the battle took place along vast trench lines, where each side attempts to attack and defend. Right now, let’s focus on the question: How does “Tannenberg” differ from “Verdun”? But this is something I’ll get into later. Tannenberg covers the Eastern front of WW1, although it doesn’t play as fast as its trench rushing half, “Verdun.” This is for a few reasons, console limitations being the main cause. They were both developed by Blackmill Games and published M2H games. “Verdun” was released in 2015 and “Tannenberg” in 2017 on PC. “Tannenberg” is a part of a two-game package, “It” and “Verdun,” portraying the Western and Eastern fronts of World War 1. What’s even more obscure, are the tales from the Eastern Front. It had a few offshoot movies and a few video games, but it is largely overshadowed by the Second World War. ![]() World War 1 is an obscure era in history. He's also referenced by Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. Aspects of his case are also woven into the backstories of Norman Bates from Psycho, Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs, and even a character on American Horror Story. Bushnell admitted that electronic tennis was a source of inspiration, but it was Pong that made a splash and captured the attention of millions. Young Nolan became interested in arcade machines when he worked part-time at an amusement park in Salt Lake City (USA). In 1968, Bushnell, a young electrical engineer with a university degree, set out to popularize electronic games. To do this, in 1969, together with Ted Dabney, he founded the company Syzygy Engineering. Friends have created a single-player version of the space shooter Computer Space built into the slot machine. The system for running one game was built on microcircuits and diodes, and was in a stylish case. In 1971, the game went on sale, but only a few hundred copies were sold, so the project was declared a failure. Users were frightened by the complexity of the space arcade. It was decided to launch a game whose rules are known to everyone. The development was entrusted to a recent university graduate, Allan Alcorn. More sound effects should have been added to the game, Alcorn coped with this task perfectly. The graphics were extremely simple, but the counter of missed balls was placed on the screen. In addition, the developer divided the surface of the racket into eight parts - the trajectory of the ball depended on the segment that the ball hit. The way Atari chose to compete with the Pong Game clones was to produce more innovative games such as "Double Pong" which was a pong game with four players, two in every side and a bigger screen. Two players controlled rackets with joysticks.Ī pilot copy of Pong was installed in a bar in September 1972.
